DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Update v1.2: Removed the diode and replaced it with MOSFET based reverse polarity protection, this was done to avoid voltage drop from the diode.
The start module works with most EU races requiring remote control (incl. RobotChallenge in Vienna).

The design itself is a rebuild of a start module built in 2014 and still in use from some competitions. The original design (not mine) can be found here: http://startmodule.com
As far as HW design, I removed all unnecessary components and moded the code so no resistor is needed for the LED (PWM combined with max current on IO pin is more than enough).
In future I am planning to write a small example for Arduino that will allow users to reuse their code with zero changes.
